Staining a deck costs $550 to $1,250 per deck and sealing costs $550 to $1,330, according to a national guide (HomeAdvisor, page updated June 17, 2026). A second guide lists $550 to $850 for staining, with a $750 average (Fixr, page updated January 31, 2025). We found no Wilmington price for either, and no Wilmington company page that lists one, so every dollar figure here is national.

Wilmington Deck Builders Pros is a referral service, not a staining company. We connect you with one independent local company, and that company does the work. This page is for people ready to hire: which finish fits your deck, how to read the weather against the can, when new wood is ready, how often to redo it, and what a written quote should list.

Deck stain, sealer or paint: what is the difference?

This Old House describes three finish types, with its own redo intervals (read October 30, 2026):

  • Clear sealer. Blocks moisture and gives minimal UV protection. Redo every 1 to 2 years.
  • Semi-transparent stain. Better UV protection than clear. Redo every 2 to 3 years.
  • Solid stain. Excellent UV protection. Redo every 3 to 5 years.

Cabot, a stain maker, lists four levels of opacity: clear or wood-toned, semi-transparent, semi-solid and solid (read October 30, 2026). These intervals are one publication's, not a Wilmington test. Ask the company for the product name, the type and how many coats, then read the maker's page for that product.

What does deck waterproofing mean on a quote?

A sealer blocks moisture, per This Old House. If a bid says waterproofing, ask for the product name, what type of coating it is, the maker's page and the length of the maker's stated protection. We could not read a source on membrane systems, so we make no claim about them.

How much does deck staining cost?

These rows are national and come from different guides, so compare them as ranges. None is a quote for your deck.

What moves the price of staining a deck?

  • Deck size, counting stairs and railings.
  • Whether the old finish must be stripped or sanded.
  • Mildew or gray wood that needs cleaning and brightening first.
  • The product, and how many coats.
  • Repairs found along the way, which belong on their own line.

What does refinishing, restoration or resurfacing cost?

The words overlap, so for deck refinishing cost, deck restoration cost or deck resurfacing cost, ask each bid whether it means a new finish on the boards you have or new boards. Fixr's restain figure ($4 to $7 per square foot) is higher than a first stain ($2 to $5), and its resurfacing range for a 300 square foot deck ($1,500 to $3,500) is for the bigger job. On 300 square feet, a stain at $2 to $5 per square foot works out to $600 to $1,500 by our arithmetic. Ask each bid to say what it includes, because the same word covers different work.

What prep does a deck need before staining?

Ask the company how it checks the wood is clean and dry enough for the finish. Ask the company to list each step it plans, one line each, and to price it: cleaning, brightening, stripping and sanding. Ask whether the quote for deck cleaning and staining shows the two as separate lines. Pressure washing is one way to clean; ask which method the company uses on soft wood and how it limits damage. Wilmington is a wet place: normal rainfall is above 60 inches a year (NWS Wilmington, 1991 to 2020 normals), and NC State Extension says wood decay fungi do not grow when wood moisture is under 20 percent. If boards are soft or rotted, see the deck repair page. Pest damage matters too. The Onslow County Extension office says carpenter bees are drawn to bare, unpainted or weathered wood, and it advises painting exposed wood. That page does not mention decks or stain, so treat it as a reason to ask the company, not as proof that stain stops bees.

When can I stain new pressure-treated wood?

Makers do not agree on one number. Viance says treated wood is typically ready to finish about 60 days after installation, depending on local weather. Sherwin-Williams says to wait 4 to 8 weeks once the deck is built (both read October 30, 2026). Both point to the same check: put a few drops of water on the boards. If the wood soaks them up, it is ready. If they bead, it is not. Follow the can for the product you buy, and ask the company to run the test before it opens a gallon. After a repair, ask the company to run the water test on any new boards.

What is the best time to stain a deck in Wilmington?

The label sets the window, and labels differ. Sherwin-Williams gives 50 to 90 F as safe, with 70 F best, and asks for two to three days of drying after a rainstorm. Cabot calls 50 to 80 F ideal and asks you to pick a day with no rain expected for 24 hours (read October 30, 2026).

Set that against Wilmington's numbers. NWS counted 44 days at 90 degrees or higher and 61 days with thunderstorms in 2025, and the year's mean temperature was 64.2 F. The year's mean sits inside both label ranges, but a yearly average does not tell you which weeks are workable. Our reading, which is an inference and not a maker statement about Wilmington: the 90-degree days and the storm days are the ones that fall outside what the labels ask for, so ask the company how it handles a hot afternoon or a forecast of rain. The can governs.

How often should I redo the finish?

Sources differ. This Old House gives 1 to 2 years for clear sealer, 2 to 3 for semi-transparent stain and 3 to 5 for solid stain. Sherwin-Williams says a new coat every 12 to 48 months keeps a deck fresh. Viance says an annual application is what most makers of water-repellent coatings recommend. No source we read says which end of the range fits Wilmington.

Use the water test as the deciding check. Cabot says that if the old stain still repels water, it is still working. This Old House names the opposite sign: areas where water no longer beads up on the surface. Run the water test when the weather warms and let the result, not the calendar, decide.

Can I stain or seal a composite deck?

Do not, unless your maker says you may. Trex's FAQ advises against painting or staining its boards and warns that doing so may void the fade-and-stain coverage (read October 30, 2026). Ask the maker how to clean it; the composite decks page covers care and warranties. If a bid includes sealing a composite deck, ask the company to show you where the maker allows it.

Should I stain the deck myself or hire a company?

Count the hours first. Fixr puts labor at about 4 hours per 100 square feet. On a 300 square foot deck that is about 12 hours of staining alone, by our arithmetic, before cleaning, stripping or sanding. Add the weather rules above: a dry day, a workable temperature, drying time after rain and, for many products, time between coats. Compare those hours with the dry days you can spare. Railings and stairs add time. If you hire, the company should answer for the prep and the coats; if you do it yourself, the product and the result are yours.

How do I compare deck staining quotes?

For a deck staining estimate, ask each company, whether it is a deck stain contractor or a general deck staining company, to write down:

  1. The area priced, in square feet, including stairs and railings.
  2. The prep steps: cleaning, brightening, stripping and sanding, each listed.
  3. The product by name, its type and its opacity.
  4. The number of coats and the wait between them.
  5. Repairs, priced apart from the finish.
  6. What happens if rain or heat delays the day.
  7. How long before furniture can go back, per the maker.
  8. Its own workmanship warranty in writing, if it offers one.

Divide each price by the area so you can compare per square foot against the table. Ask for proof of insurance and for any registration that applies; the company has to show them, not Wilmington Deck Builders Pros. If you want a new deck or a bigger job, the deck builders page covers it. Questions about this site? See the contact page.

What is the best time of year to stain in Wilmington?

Labels ask for roughly 50 to 90 F and dry weather. Wilmington had 44 days at 90 F or higher and 61 thunderstorm days in 2025, so ask the company how it plans around them.

How do I know when my deck needs restaining?

Pour water on it. If it beads, Cabot says the finish is still working. If water no longer beads up, This Old House says the finish is wearing.

Does the old finish have to be stripped before restaining?
