A national cost guide puts a typical deck repair at $890 to $3,664 per job, or $3 to $20 per square foot (HomeAdvisor, page updated June 20, 2026). A second guide lists $500 to $3,000 with a $1,500 average, and $500 to $10,000 for termite damage on a 300 square foot deck (Fixr, page updated January 31, 2025; read October 30, 2026). We found no deck repair price published by any Wilmington company, so these are national guides, not quotes.
Wilmington Deck Builders Pros is a referral service, not a repair company. We connect you with one independent local deck company, and that company does the repair. This page is for people ready to hire: how to tell what is wrong, what a good visit looks at below the boards, what each type of repair costs, when replacing wins, and how to compare two quotes.
How do I know if my deck needs repair? Signs to look for
Walk the deck slowly, then look under it. These are the signs that justify a call:
- Soft or spongy boards.
- Cracked or splintered boards.
- Rot at the posts or at the ends of the stair stringers (the angled boards that carry the steps).
- Wobbly railings: a rail that moves when you lean on it.
- Loose or sagging stairs, or stairs that pull away from the deck.
- A gap or movement where the deck meets the house.
- Sagging framing: a dip in the surface or a bounce that was not there before.
- Popped nails, loose screws, or rusted fasteners and connectors.
- Insect tunnels, or small round holes in the wood.
- Slippery or moldy surfaces, green with mold.
- A peeling or gray finish, or bare wood.
Cosmetic signs, such as a gray or peeling finish, point to refinishing. Movement signs point to the frame, and those come first. NC State Extension gives two checks for wood: wood that sounds hollow when tapped may be damaged, and so may wood that a screwdriver tip enters easily. If the deck moves while you test it, stop and ask a company or inspector to look.
What does a deck repair visit check below the surface?
A deck inspection or deck safety inspection looks at the parts you cannot see from the top. Ask the visiting company to report on each and to photograph anything it finds:
- The ledger, the board that fastens the deck to the house, and its flashing.
- The joists and the rim joists, which are the frame under the boards and the board along its edge.
- The beams, the posts and the post bases, including how posts meet the footings.
- The footings in the ground.
- Railing post attachment: how the rail posts are fastened to the frame.
- The stairs, stringers and landing.
- The hardware: screws, joist hangers and connectors.
Fixr lists a deck inspection at $25 to $200, from a quick check to an in-depth one (January 31, 2025). It also lists a repair call-out fee of $50 to $75, an emergency fee of $50 to $150, and an hourly rate of $50 to $100. An inspection before a big job turns a guess into a list.
How much does deck repair cost by repair type?
The national ranges overall are $890 to $3,664 per job (HomeAdvisor) and $500 to $3,000 (Fixr). This table puts the two national guides side by side and keeps the scopes apart. Where the two disagree, trust neither as a quote. Use them to check whether a bid sits far outside the range.

| Deck inspection | $25 to $200 | Fixr, January 31, 2025 |
The widest rows are the ones where the cause is hidden: rot, sag and termites. That is why the first visit should be an inspection, not a price on the phone. Ask for each repair as its own line, with photos, then add the lines up.
What moves the price of a deck repair?
- How much frame is damaged. The table prices posts, footings and joists as their own lines, apart from boards.
- Access. Ask whether the deck's height changes the work under it.
- Material. Composite boards, hardwood and treated pine are priced differently, so name the material on the bid.
- Permit and inspection fees. The fees are listed in the permit section below.
- Finishing. Cleaning, staining or sealing after the repair is a separate line.
Board repair and replacement: can I replace just some deck boards?
Yes, when the frame under them is sound. Board replacement is priced per square foot of decking, and the question for the company is whether the joists under the boards are in good shape. If they are not, new boards sit on a weak frame. The choice is single boards versus full resurfacing: replacing every board on a sound frame is closer to resurfacing, which has its own section below. Ask which one the bid describes.
New boards may not look like old ones, so matching existing wood takes a sample. Ask the company to hold one against your boards before it orders, and ask whether it plans to replace a whole run so any color break falls at an edge. For matching existing composite boards, ask for the maker's line, color and profile by name, and ask whether that line is still made. The composite decks page covers what to ask about warranties.
What does rail and stair repair involve?
Ask the company how it would handle re-securing guard posts, replacing balusters and handrails, and re-anchoring stairs and stringers on your deck, and why it would start where it does. The prices are in the table: railing, stair repair, stair replacement and anchoring. Ask the company what guard and stair numbers it is building to, and ask the county whether a repair of that size is inspected.
When does deck repair become structural?
Structural repair covers the parts that hold the deck up. It means sistering or replacing joists, beam and post replacement, new or added footings, ledger reattachment and new flashing.
- Joists. A damaged joist can be repaired or replaced, and the table lists both prices. Ask whether the company plans sistering or replacing joists, and why.
- Posts and footings. A decayed post is replaced, and a failed footing is replaced or added to. Ask who confirmed the size and depth with the county. New holes mean calling NC811 three working days ahead, and NC811 says private lines on private property are not marked.
- Ledger and flashing. If the deck pulls from the house, ask to see the ledger and its fasteners, and ask how the flashing will be replaced so water runs away from the joint.
Ask for a photo of the failed part before it is removed, and a photo of the new part before it is covered.
Fastener and hardware upgrades: what should be replaced?
Rusted screws and connectors are a repair item. Corrosion-resistant screws, joist hangers and connectors are the upgrade lines to price. Ask what metal each fastener is and why, and read the maker's current warranty for your product, since it controls what is covered at your address.
Rot repair: removing decayed wood and what causes it
Moisture is what the Extension source ties to decay. Wilmington's normal annual rainfall is above 60 inches (NWS Wilmington, 1991 to 2020 normals), and 2018 set the record at 102.40 inches, with 23.02 inches from Hurricane Florence at the airport. NC State Extension says wood decay fungi do not grow when wood moisture is under 20 percent, and it lists improving ventilation or drainage and repairing leaks as the controls. That page covers houses and crawlspaces, not decks, so use it as a checklist for your own posts and low joists.
A rot repair bid should say how far the company is removing decayed wood and what it is doing about the cause, since the same moisture will rot the new piece. Ask about the likely causes in turn: trapped moisture, poor drainage and unprotected end grain. Ask whether the company proposes epoxy fillers for non-structural rot, where, and why, and what it does when rot reaches a post, beam or the ledger.
Termite and insect damage: the carpentry repair vs treatment by a licensed pest control company
Termites. NC State Extension says eastern subterranean termites live in all North Carolina counties, are fed by moisture, and swarm from late spring to late summer, usually on warm days after rain. It names soil, mulch or leaves touching wood as an easy way in, and mud tubes as a sign. It also says treatment is best left to licensed professionals. That points to two trades, the carpentry repair vs treatment by a licensed pest control company: a pest control company treats the colony, and a deck company replaces the damaged wood. Pest control for termites runs $200 to $600 per job nationally (HomeAdvisor, June 20, 2026), separate from the table above. Ask which trade comes first and who coordinates.
Carpenter bees. The Extension office in Onslow County says carpenter bees are drawn to bare, unpainted or weathered wood and seem to prefer softwoods such as cedar, cypress and pine. Its page does not mention decks. It advises painting exposed wood, with polyurethane or oil-based paint best. After a repair, a finish may matter for more than looks; see deck staining and sealing.
Ask the company how it will treat the cut ends of new wood, whether it fills or replaces rotted sections and why, and what it does to keep water from pooling at the repair.
Storm and wind damage repair: what should I do after a hurricane, and what insurance documentation helps?
Storm damaged deck repair and hurricane damaged deck repair start with records, and so does deck repair after a storm of any kind. Photograph the damage from several sides, note the date, and keep the written scope from whoever inspects it. Wind damage and water damage go in the same file. We found no sourced claim steps for North Carolina, so we do not state what your insurer will pay or require, and Wilmington Deck Builders Pros promises no outcome with any insurer. For storm damaged deck insurance repair, call your insurer first, and ask what documents it needs before work begins.
NWS counted 61 days with thunderstorms in Wilmington in 2025. New Hanover County says Wilmington, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Wrightsville Beach run their own floodplain regulations, and that new construction must meet national flood insurance standards, mainly by elevating the lowest floor. The county page gives no threshold for how much repair counts as new construction. Ask your town's floodplain office whether a large repair on a deck in a flood zone counts as new construction.
We promise no emergency or same-day repair. If a deck looks unsafe, the first step is not to use it (see below).
Composite deck repair and the maker's warranty
For fading, loosening hardware or edge swelling on composite, ask the company whether the maker's warranty covers your problem. Trex's FAQ lists limited warranties of 25, 35 and 50 years, depending on the product, and advises against painting or staining its boards because that may void the fade-and-stain coverage (trex.com FAQ, read October 30, 2026). So the first question for a composite repair is which warranty applies and whether your repair or cleaning affects it. Ask the company to read the warranty with you before it touches the deck, and keep your purchase records.
Resurfacing on a sound frame, refinishing, pressure washing, staining and sealing after repair
Finishing comes after the repair, not before. Rot and loose parts go first, and the deck staining and sealing page covers the finish itself. For a 300 square foot deck, Fixr lists deck resurfacing at $1,500 to $3,500 and refurbishing at $1,000 to $3,000 (January 31, 2025). Resurfacing assumes a sound frame, so ask the company to confirm the joists, ledger and posts before it quotes either. HomeAdvisor lists pressure washing for mildew at $200 to $450, staining at $550 to $1,250 and sealing at $550 to $1,250 per deck (June 20, 2026). Deck refinishing, deck restoration and deck resurfacing overlap in sales talk, so ask each bid to say whether it means a new finish or new boards.
Should I repair or replace my deck?
Judge it on four things: age, framing condition, share of the deck affected, and a cost comparison of the repair bid against replacement. Fixr's table for a 300 square foot deck gives a repair range of $500 to $3,000 and a replacement range of $6,000 to $18,600 (January 31, 2025). Removal of the old deck alone is $5 to $15 per square foot (HomeAdvisor, June 20, 2026), which is $1,500 to $4,500 on 300 square feet by our arithmetic.
| Question | Points to repair | Points to replace |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the damage? | Boards, rails or one stair set | Posts, beams, ledger or footings in several places |
| How much of the deck is affected? | A small share, in separate spots | Most of the frame or most of the surface |
| How old is it? | Younger, with a sound frame | Old, with repairs piling up |
| What do the numbers say? | Repair is a small share of replacement cost | Repair bids approach replacement cost |
Many Wilmington homes are older: about 39 percent (26,074 of 67,186 housing units) were built before 1980 (American Community Survey 2024, 1-year estimates). The census figure shows house age, not deck age, so ask when the deck was built. If a company recommends replacement, ask for the findings in photos and for a separate repair price, then compare. The deck builders page covers new-deck prices and the build path.
Unsafe decks: when to stop using a deck and get an urgent repair
If you are not sure the deck is safe, stay off it until a deck company or inspector has looked. Then ask each company how soon it can inspect, whether it can get an urgent repair onto its schedule, and ask what it advises while you wait. We make no engineering judgment on this page; a deck company or inspector makes it on site.
Do I need a permit for deck repairs in Wilmington?
New Hanover County's Department of Permits and Inspections issues all building permits inside the City of Wilmington. You apply through the COAST online portal or at the County Government Center (City of Wilmington building permits page, read October 30, 2026). The county's FAQ says that most construction needs a permit, lists structural work as needing one, and lists paint, flooring and cabinets as not needing one. It does not name decks or deck repairs, and its "Do I Need a Permit?" page holds no list we could read. So we state no rule for swapping a board or fixing a rail. Ask the county before work starts, including whether structural repair or rebuilding needs a permit, and write down the name and the answer.
- Fees. $60 for work needing one inspection, or $0.221 per square foot with a $400 minimum for work needing two or more. A $50 fee applies after two failed inspections.
- Inspections. County visits run 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Next-business-day requests go into COAST before 3:30 pm. A visit takes 5 minutes to 2 hours with no guaranteed window, and inspectors do not carry ladders.
- Expiry. A permit expires if work has not started in six months or stops for 12 months, and expired permits are not refunded.
- Who pulls it. Ask the company in writing.
- Historic districts. A project in a local historic district also needs a Certificate of Appropriateness, per the city.
The county FAQ also says projects valued at $40,000 or more generally require a licensed general contractor. Most repairs sit well below that, going by the table above, so ask any company what license or registration applies to the work and check it with the issuer.
Repairing a deck before selling a home, and home-inspection findings
A deck repair for a home sale should come with paperwork. If you are selling, ask the repair company for the findings in writing, and keep photos, the paid invoice and any final inspection record for the next owner. If you are buying, a deck inspection before buying a house costs $25 to $200 nationally (Fixr), which is small next to the repair ranges above. Ask that the inspector look at the ledger, posts and footings and not only at the boards.
How long does deck repair take?
We found no sourced Wilmington repair time, and we will not guess. Ask for dates in writing. The pieces that set the schedule are: the inspection visit, the quote, materials, any permit or inspection (next-business-day requests go in by 3:30 pm), a utility locate before new holes, and the weather. With more than 60 inches of rain in a normal year, ask what happens to the schedule when it rains.
Seasonal maintenance and yearly safety checks: how do I keep a repaired deck in good shape?
Once a year, before summer, walk the deck: press the boards, shake the rails, look at every stair and check the screws. Look under it for damp patches. NC State Extension names soil, mulch or leaves touching wood as an easy way in for termites, so keep them clear. If the finish is worn, see deck staining and sealing. Pressure washing a mildewed deck costs $200 to $450 (HomeAdvisor, June 20, 2026).
How to choose a deck repair company: how do I compare deck repair quotes?
Handyman vs deck contractor: the questions to ask are the same for a deck repair company and for a handyman. Structural work is a different job from replacing boards, so ask whether the person has done it, who pulls the permit and what license or registration applies. For a deck repair quote or estimate, ask for:
- A written scope that lists each repair with its own price.
- Photos of any hidden damage found.
- The material, brand and fastener metal for each part.
- Who pulls the permit and who pays the fee.
- Whether the price includes finishing, disposal and cleanup.
- What happens if more damage turns up mid-job, and how a change gets approved.
- Payment stages, with the last payment after the work is done and any inspection passed.
- The company's own warranty on its work in writing, and the maker's warranty for any part.
Ask for proof of insurance. A company's statement that it holds a license or insurance is only a statement; the document is the proof, and it is the company's to show, not Wilmington Deck Builders Pros's. Questions about this site? See the contact page.
What this page cannot tell you
We found no readable source for guard heights and baluster gaps, stair dimensions, footing depths, how epoxy fillers hold up, or which hardware metals suit salt air, so this page prints no numbers for them. Ask the county inspector for the code numbers and ask the company to write the ones it is building to on the bid.
Deck repair in Wilmington FAQ
How much does deck repair cost in Wilmington?
No Wilmington price is published by the companies we checked. Nationally HomeAdvisor lists $890 to $3,664 (June 20, 2026) and Fixr lists $500 to $3,000 (January 31, 2025).
Can you replace just part of a deck?
Yes, if the frame under the replaced part is sound. Ask the company to confirm the joists before it quotes boards.
Is it better to repair or replace an old deck?
Fixr lists $500 to $3,000 to repair and $6,000 to $18,600 to replace a 300 square foot deck. Replacement may win when posts, the ledger or footings are damaged in several places.
Do I need a permit for deck repairs?
The county lists structural work as needing a permit but names no deck repair rule we could read. Ask New Hanover County Permits and Inspections before work starts.
How long does a deck repair take?
We found no sourced Wilmington time. Ask for dates for inspection, materials, permit and weather delays in writing.
Can new boards match my existing deck?
Maybe not exactly. Ask for a sample held against your boards, and ask whether a whole run of boards will be replaced so any color break falls at an edge.
Does termite damage mean the whole deck is lost?
Not by itself. Fixr's range for termite repair on a 300 square foot deck is $500 to $10,000. A pest control company handles the colony, and a deck company replaces the damaged wood.
Will insurance pay for storm damage?
We found no sourced claim rules, so we make no promise. Document the damage and ask your insurer what it needs.
Can the deck be stained or sealed after repair?
See the staining page for when new wood is ready, and note that Trex advises against staining its composite.
Is there a warranty on deck repair work?
That depends on the company. Ask for its workmanship warranty in writing, and for the maker's warranty on any new part.
Can I get same day or emergency deck repair?
Wilmington Deck Builders Pros promises no same-day or emergency service. If the deck is unsafe, stop using it and ask each company how soon it can inspect.
