A pergola on a deck costs $30 to $60 per square foot and a deck roof $3,000 to $10,000 in the national ranges (HomeAdvisor, page updated June 17, 2026). A pergola averages $4,000, with most between $2,100 and $6,000 (LawnLove, page dated December 27, 2025). Ask the company to price the attachment to your deck as its own line. We found no Wilmington price for either, so treat the numbers as national guides.

Wilmington Deck Builders Pros is a referral service, not a builder. We connect you with one independent local deck company, and that company designs and builds the structure. This page separates the options, shows the dated costs, explains the structure and drainage questions that decide whether a roof belongs on your deck, and lists the permit and association steps to check first. We found no published Wilmington build time, so the schedule section lists what sets the dates.

What is the difference between a covered deck and a pergola?

LawnLove prices a louvered roof as an extra $25 to $130 per square foot; ask each company to say in writing whether its bid has a solid roof, open slats or louvers. Whether you call deck and patio builders, pergola contractors or covered deck contractors, the first question to answer is what you want overhead: shade, a dry deck, or both. If your cover is for a covered patio over a slab, not a deck, ask the company to price it as its own job. Ask the company to price an arbor or any other shade structure as its own line, since the cost guides we read price pergolas and deck roofs.

The two guides count it differently: HomeAdvisor by the square foot for a pergola and per roof for a deck roof. Deck roof installation runs $3,000 to $10,000 per roof nationally (HomeAdvisor), so check which way each bid counts. Pergola cost and pergola installation cost swing with material and size. A 12 by 12 pergola (144 square feet) at HomeAdvisor's deck range works out to $4,320 to $8,640 by multiplication. The county's fee page is the local source for permit fees; ask which tier a pergola or roof falls in. For roof over deck cost, ask each bid to state the roof type, the size and the framing it prices. For covered deck cost, add the deck and the roof; a covered deck estimate that prices them together should still show them on separate lines.

What moves the price?

  • Roof or open slats. Ask what framing, covering and drainage each bid includes.
  • Material. The table shows the spread from vinyl to fiberglass.
  • Attached or free-standing. Ask how an attached pergola installation is fastened and flashed.
  • Size and height. Ask what beam and post sizes each bid uses.
  • Extras. Fans, lights and heaters are electrical work. The county says trade permits are included in its residential fees. Ask who does the wiring and what license that person holds.
  • Deck work first. If the existing deck cannot carry a roof, the frame costs more.

Can my existing deck take a roof or pergola?

This is the question that matters most, and a catalog price does not answer it. Ask the company how the added weight, the wind and the roof water are handled. Ask the company, in writing:

  • Do the posts land on their own footings, or on the deck boards and frame?
  • Was the deck framing designed for a roof, and if not, what reinforcement is proposed?
  • Is the roof attached to the house, or freestanding? Where it meets the wall, how is it flashed?
  • Where does roof water go? Ask about gutters and downspouts.
  • How is the roof anchored against wind? We print no wind-speed or uplift number, because we could not verify one.

For covered deck construction, ask the company whether the frame was sized for a roof, and what it would check before adding one later. The deck builders page lists the framing questions for any deck.

Which pergola or roof material fits a Wilmington yard?

  • Pine. The lowest wood price in the LawnLove table ($25 per square foot). Ask about the finish and how often to renew it.
  • Cedar. $30 in the same table. NC State Extension's Onslow County office says carpenter bees are drawn to bare, unpainted or weathered wood and seem to prefer softwoods such as cedar, cypress or pine, and recommends painting exposed wood with polyurethane or oil-based paint. It does not mention decks or pergolas. If you choose bare cedar or pine, ask what covers the wood.
  • Aluminum and vinyl. $20 per square foot. Ask how they are fastened, what the finish warranty says, and whether near-salt-water exclusions apply.
  • Fiberglass. LawnLove lists $60 per square foot.

Wood in a wet place needs care. NC State Extension says untreated wood should be at least 8 inches from soil and that wood-rotting fungi will not grow when moisture is under 20 percent (a house and crawlspace page). Ask where each post meets the deck or ground. For hardware near salt water, ask what metal the screws and brackets use and why.

What roof options work on a covered deck?

Ask each company which roof covering and which ceiling finish its bid uses, and ask for each as a priced option. We found no sourced price for roof coverings or ceilings. Ask whether the roof matches the house and whether your association reviews roofs. Ask who does any electrical work for ceiling fans or lights and who pulls that permit.

How does shade help in Wilmington?

NWS Wilmington's 2025 summary counts 44 days at 90 degrees or higher and 61 days with thunderstorms, and normal annual rainfall is above 60 inches. Ask whether the bid has a solid roof, open slats or louvers, and what each does in rain. LawnLove lists a louvered roof at $25 to $130 per square foot extra. Ask the company which deck shade structure its bid covers, and to stand on the deck at the time of day you use it.

Do covered decks and pergolas need a permit in Wilmington?

Ask first. The county says most construction projects need a building permit and lists structural work, but its "Do I Need a Permit?" page holds no readable list and names no pergola or roof rule. For a covered deck permit, ask the county whether a roof over a deck, or a pergola, counts as structural work, which the county lists as needing a permit.

  • Who issues it. New Hanover County's Department of Permits and Inspections issues all building permits inside the City of Wilmington, through COAST or in person (City of Wilmington, read October 30, 2026).
  • City zoning first. Confirm the structure meets the Land Development Code, as the city asks. We could not read the code, so we print no distance; ask City Zoning with your survey in hand.
  • Fees. $60 for a minor permit, or $0.221 per square foot with a $400 minimum for two or more inspections.
  • Inspections and expiry. Requests in COAST before 3:30 pm for the next business day. A permit expires if work has not started in six months.
  • Historic district and associations. A Certificate of Appropriateness may apply, and your association may have its own rules. We found no local rule, so ask for yours in writing.
  • Coastal and flood lots. The county says a CAMA permit is required for most development in a coastal Area of Environmental Concern, and each of Wilmington, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Wrightsville Beach runs its own floodplain rules. Ask the local permit officer. On an oceanfront lot, ask the local permit officer whether a roof over a deck counts as development in an oceanfront area.

Ask each company for a written bid for pergola or cover installation, and whether the quote prices pergolas, arbors and shade structures separately from the deck.

How long does a pergola or covered deck take?

We found no sourced Wilmington time, so treat any number you hear as the company's own claim. Ask for a start window and finish date in writing. The schedule depends on design, the zoning and permit steps above, association review, the NC811 wait of three working days before digging, material lead times, inspections and weather.

How do I compare covered deck and pergola quotes?

  • Roof or slat material, and framing sizes.
  • Post footings, and whether posts rest on the deck.
  • Ledger or freestanding, with the flashing method.
  • Drainage, gutters and downspouts.
  • Electrical priced separately, with the licensed person named.
  • Who pulls the permit and requests inspections.
  • Repair of the existing deck, as its own line.
  • Workmanship warranty in writing, and any maker warranty.

Ask what license or registration the company holds. The county FAQ says projects worth $40,000 or more generally require a licensed general contractor. Ask for proof of insurance and references. For turning a covered deck into a screened room, see screened porches, and for the board you walk on, see composite decks. Site questions go to the contact page.
